PIXAR: How Pixar Nurtures Creativity*

14 10 2008

In the September edition of the Harvard Business Review Ed Catmull, cofounder of Pixar and the president of Pixar and Disney Animation studios, talks about how Pixar leadership forsters what they call “Collective Creativity

This is definitly an article worth reading. You can find an exec summary here as well as a link to the coinciding audio cast here.

Catmull speaks/writes about creating the right “culture” or “enviroment” that encourages people to work as a team which can turn something that looks risky or even a mediocre idea into something really good. He says it’s more about good people and not so much about the “one” good idea and that it is vital in that process that everybody is heard and everybody can communicate with anyone, but that the expectation is as well taht everybody needs to stay connected to the progress and innovation happening around them.

At the end of the article there is a nice personal note from Catmull:

“…For 20 years, I pursued a dream of making the first computer-animated film. to be honest, after that goal was realized- when we finished Toy Story – I was a bit lost. But then I realized the most exciting thing I had ever done was to help create the unique environment that allowed that film to be made. …”

Enjoy the read!

And for all of you fellow PIXAR short film lovers out there here is a special treat… ;o)

HBO: The Black List – Volume 1*

13 10 2008

I was over in the U.S. a few weeks back and saw this really interesting and impressive documentary on HBO.

In “The Black List”  22 prominet Afro-Americans tell their own story and reveal insights into the struggles, triumphs and joys of black life in the United States. Each of them speaks for approx. 4-5 minutes and is filmed in front of a simple grey screen.

Renowned portrait photographer and filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, directed, and award winning journalist Elvis Mitchell interviewed the following complete list of people and put the piece together:

If you click on the links they will take you to some of the video pieces. In addition here is the trailer.

The documentary also is the hub of the “The Black List Project“:

“The project celebrates the diverse experiences of being black in America and maximizes the power of these stories through a range of activities, including: a traveling museum exhibition of photographic portraits, organized by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; an upcoming book of photographs and interviews, published by Atria, a division of Simon & Schuster, New York; and a national interactive, curriculum-based educational program. “The Black List Project” is produced by Freemind Ventures, a New York-based media collective, and is the pilot program to the larger Freemind initiative “One Million Stories.”

I really like this documentary as it covers members of the Afro-American community from so many different lines of work. From what I understand HBO is working on a Volume two that will have more political and also social leaders in it. Looking forward to that!

BMW US: Rampenfest – BMW 1-series Viral campaign*

27 06 2008

Now here is what I call a really funny viral campaign (maybe because I live in Germany ;o)….

Some of you might already know this one, but for those who don’t…for the introduction of the BMW 1-series in North America, BMW US have created a fully integrated viral campaign.

The story line is really funny. The little (fake) Bavarian town Oberpfaffelnbachen is building a 454 meter-high ramp that will launch the BMW 135i over the European landscape and across the Atlantic into the US. To have the world participate Jeff Schultz (fake) documentary filmmaker produced a 30 min film (www.rampenfest.com).

Here is the trailer…

The campaign is integrated across a number of channels beginning with the official Rampenfest Film Website, the offical Oberpfaffelbachen town website that feat. the MISS RAMPENFEST Competition, Jeff Schultz’s Facebook site (with approx 800 friends) and his blog.

Also worth seeing are Jeff’s Youtube page and the Friendster page of Franz Brendl the Oberpfaffelbachen town’s council.

This is a really cool project that tries to make people aware of the fact that even though there is a lot things that make us different at the same time there are many things that we have in common…including only this one planet. This expressed thorugh the common love of films around the globe.

Today, on May 10, 2008 Pangea Day will run in several countries around the globe broadcasting an array of films, music performances (incl. Dave Stewart, Bob Geldorf, ….), speeches and moreSpecial Events will take place in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro.

People are encouraged to host official and local gatherings to join in on this event.

To promote the event idea the organizers have asked several socially active VIP’s to tape small promo clips.

Here is a really cool one from Robin Williams:

The list of films that will be shown is really interesting. Here is one of them, produced by the agency Razorfish that picks up the topic of global warming by making us aware of the global exticinction of “Wild Snowmen”

Sponsor Nokia has launched a special promotion on their OVI sharing platform which encouraged people to produce their own little “mobiel” clips for pangea day. Check out the winners!
